Dan Geraghty begins a new weekly column with four big priced picks on the European Tour...
"Last week's winner Lee Slattery isn't resting on his laurels for long. The Englishman has some excellent Kennemer form to draw on, having been fourth here in 2008. While he's swinging so well, it may be wise to strike while the irons are hot"
Thursday's weather forecast suggests the wind will be up for much of the day, with the very early starters enjoying slightly better conditions. Of the really early starters the only player with any kind of recent form at Zandvoort is Oliver Fisher (first on the course on Thursday, from hole number 10), who was ninth here last year and 11th in 2013. With the best of the greens and a slightly calmer weather for the first couple of hours, the Englishman looks a tasty proposition for first round leader.
Last week's winner Lee Slattery isn't resting on his laurels for long. The Englishman is out just 20 minutes after Fisher and has some excellent Kennemer form to draw on, having been fourth here in 2008. While he's swinging so well, it may be wise to strike while the irons are hot and back Slattery for first round leader this week.
Like Slattery, Estanislao Goya played fantastically last week, leaving many observers scratching their heads. Although not impressing on the European/Challenge Tour in recent years, there are bits and pieces of form around for Goya; he won in 2014 on the Sunshine Tour in South Africa. Although his two Kennemer appearances leave a bit to be desired (a missed cut in 2013 followed by 75th place last year), I'm willing to take a chance at a huge price given his performance last week.
The changeable forecast does call for the wind to start easing a little from 6pm, so perhaps the very late starters will catch a break, and I must include one from the back of the field. Fabrizio Zanotti has some interesting history with Kennemer Golf Club; he was second after the first round in 2013, following an opening 65 and also shot rounds of 64, 65 and 66 in 2008/9. However, the memories aren't all good, last year Zanotti was struck on the head with a golf ball during his first round and forced to withdraw from the tournament; the Paraguayan has some unfinished business this week.
