It's a WGC event so there's two betting options in Paul's search for an elusive winner at three figures

As we've got a World Golf Championship this week, I've taken the liberty of picking two selections towards my pursuit of that elusive triple-priced winner. As both are above [200.0], I suppose it could be seen as two for the price of one.

Course form is extremely important at Firestone, a gruelling test that many top players never seem to get along with. Witness the dire recent records of Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els and Padraig Harrington, for instance. Both of my selections, therefore, can at least boast high-class efforts at Firestone.

Firstly, Lucas Glover looks a crazy price at [250.0] considering he finished fourth on his sole previous visit to this venue in Akron, Ohio. That was a top effort, and the 28-year-old has improved in the two years since.

I've considered Glover many times before for this column. He's one of the better up and coming players in the States, has won already in the 2005 FUNAI Classic, and strikes me as well overdue a second PGA Tour title. He's been in contention several times since, rewarding big-priced trades though ultimately failing to close the deal. As a fairly regular contender, Glover must be worth persisting with whilst available at these huge odds, because sooner or later his luck will change.

Firestone looks the last chance saloon for Darren Clarke's bid to fight his way back into Ryder Cup contention, but despite odds of [250.0] I don't think he's an entirely forlorn hope. He certainly can call upon some very positive experiences on this tough track, most memorably when winning this lucrative event in 2003. That was in the middle of a run of four top-20s at Firestone, where he also finished third in 2001.

All of that seems a long time ago in the life and career of Clarke, but he's played much better in 2008 than for several years and more importantly has rediscovered his love for the game. Before his last three disappointing starts, Clarke had consistently ranked near the top of the crucial greens in regulation stats all year. Scoring well in that statistic is an imperative on this tough golf course, so Darren must be worth a small punt at silly odds.
