Find Me a 100 Winner: Two hot putters to thrive at Copperhead

Luke Guthrie has similar potential to man of the moment Patrick Reed

Paul Krishnamurty's two triple-figure priced outsiders at this week's Valspar Championship are a largely forgotten major champion, and a youngster with the potential to at least emulate him...

"The 24 year-old had a big reputation - the equal of Patrick Reed - entering his novice season a year ago, and is definitely making progress."

There is little to learn from the list of recent winners of the Valspar Championship, which ranges from oldies like Jim Furyk and Mark Calcavecchia, to young guns Sean O'Hair and Gary Woodland. There is, however, one statistical clue, in that a great putting week is essential. Of the last four champions, none ranked lower than sixth in that regard. So while this week's two selections are very different types of player, at the opposite end of their careers, they do at least share that common thread. Over the past three months on the PGA Tour, Luke Guthrie ranks second and Justin Leonard fifth for putting average.

Guthrie, also recommended in our each-way column at 81.080/1, just sneaks into our price range at 100.099/1 and is well worth following while he is. The 24 year-old had a big reputation - the equal of Patrick Reed - entering his novice season a year ago, and is definitely making progress. He caught the eye during the autumn with places on both this tour and the Race to Dubai and didn't fare too badly when carrying this column's cash a fortnight ago, registering his third top-25 of the season.

In all honesty I didn't expect to be backing Leonard again but the former Open champion is enjoying something of a renaissance. He recently landed a third place in the Humana Challenge, following on from sixth at the end of last season in the OHL Classic. His Copperhead record is pretty impressive too, even during a generally unsuccessful decade. Leonard has only missed the top-30 twice in that time and finished fourth last year. The similarity with 2007 champ Calcavecchia is obvious.

The trading plan is to stake five units in total on the pair, then place lay orders at 10.09/1 and 3.02/1 with a view to banking a profit. Should either hit the first target, we'd be guaranteed to at least quadruple our initial outlay.
