Paul Krishnamurty's hunt for outsider value continues at the Irish Open and 3M Open. Check out his trio of picks here...

Wide, soft fairways...could give Peter Uihlein a better chance than usual. His last good result came when fifth at Trinity Forest, when enjoying great room off the tee."

Back Peter Uihlein 1u each-way @ 150/1 (1/5 odds, seven places)

We've got two very different tournaments to weigh up this week. The Irish Open on a short, classic links and the 3M Open on a layout made for bombers.

Both have plenty of potential for backing outsiders - several of whom are recommended across these pages. For example three of our five each-way selections - Matthias Schwab, Matthew Southgate and Alvaro Quiros - would all meet our odds criteria. So do three of Steve Rawlings' outright picks. In the interests of variety, here's one more for Lahinch.

Bjork's scrambling excellence a big plus

Back Alexander Bjork 2u @ [210.0]
Place order to lay 20u @ [15.0]

Alexander Bjork was a regular in contention this time last year, but, as odds of [210.0] imply, he hasn't hit the same heights this term. He's playing well enough just off the pace, though, with top-25s on his last three Euro Tour starts.

The Swede is a superb scrambler, ranking fifth for strokes gained around the green even during this lesser season. That is usually a crucial asset around links and this beautiful course - a newcomer to the schedule - looks very challenging around the greens.

PGA Tour set for another birdie-fest

As with last week's Rocket Mortgage Classic, we're dealing with a new event and course at the 3M Open. As Steve Rawlings explains in his comprehensive preview, all the indications are it will yield another birdie-fest and there's every chance of another massive shock to follow 999-1 Nate Lashley.

Lashley wasn't unpickable. He was covered in this column recently, on the basis of stats rather than results, but of course it is never easy to get the week right. That shows the value of perseverance so I'm prepared to try again with a name picked last week.

Back Peter Malnati 2u @ [140.0]
Place order to lay 20u @ [10.0]

Although that event wasn't in the plan, I backed Malnati at [200.0] and laid some back for a profit at [15.0] on day two. He played very well for three rounds before falling back to a more typical 29th. He's now made 13 out of his last 15 cuts.

Malnati's statistical fortes - 42nd on a high-class strokes gained approach list, 17th for strokes gained putting, 3.97 birdies per round over the past three months - imply he's ideally suited to this low-scoring challenge.

Wide fairways should suit bomber Uihlein

Back Peter Uihlein 1u each-way @ 150/1 (1/5 odds, seven places)

Wide, soft fairways must offer an advantage to the bombers and the lack of penalty off the tee could give Peter Uihlein a better chance than usual. His last good result came when fifth at Trinity Forest, when enjoying great room off the tee.

Uihlein is another excellent putter, ranking 42nd for strokes gained and he has a particularly good record on these surfaces. In terms of improved performance on bentgrass greens, Future of Fantasy rank him second on their list.

One more outsider very much on my shortlist is Dave Tindall's each-way pick Wyndham Clark. He's both very long off the tee and a great putter. If any of the picks withdraw, he's first reserve.
