Northern Trust Open Tips: Each-way selections for the Riviera test

Can Paul land a third place in succession with Bill Haas?
Can Paul land a third place in succession with Bill Haas? Or will he go one better?

Betting.Betfair's golf team are in fine form, finding the tournament winner in consecutive weeks at 40-1 and 25-1 as well as placed golfers at 14-1 and 66-1, and we're staying on the PGA Tour for this week's selections in an attempt to land the hat-trick. Here are our picks...

"Two of Bill's five PGA Tour victories have come in California and his long-term stats in the state are highly impressive, regularly rewarding each-way backers."

Paul Krishnamurty: Back Bill Haas @ 29.028/1

Joe Dyer: Back Kevin Na  @ 71.070/1

Kevin Na was injured for much of last season but he looks fighting fit now and arrives at Riviera in very good form. The 30-year-old has made four starts in 2014, making the cut in every tournament and finishing top ten twice - including fourth last weekend - as well as a top 20 in Phoenix a fortnight ago. With a best finish of third at Riviera (2011) we know he can perform on the course, something his stats suggest he is well equipped to do. Na is hugely accurate with his approach shots and deadly on the green. Seemingly relieved to be back on tour and in good health, Na is primed for a decent tournament this week.

Dan Geraghty: Back Charles Howell III @ 51.050/1

Charles Howell III is renowned for starting the season in fine form, but this time around his start has been special even by his standards. Sure, once again, he's failed to add to his two PGA Tour victories, but 'Chucky Three Sticks' has registered five top 10s in his nine starts, without missing a cut, racking up more than a million dollars in prize money along the way. Those five top 10s equal last season's total already, and we're only mid-February. Howell has missed his last three Riviera cuts but his last win came on this course in 2007 and he certainly looks worth a risk at 50/1.

Paul Krishnamurty: Back Bill Haas @ 29.028/1

Like much of the West Coast Swing, previous course form tends to offer an essential guide to the Northern Trust Open, an event that has produced several multiple winners. Bill Haas has clearly got the hang of it, finishing third, first and 12th in the last three renewals and therefore looks a likely candidate to become the latest to double up. Two of Bill's five PGA Tour victories have come in California and his long-term stats in the state are highly impressive, regularly rewarding each-way backers. He's started the year playing fairly well, consistently just outside contention, so this return to his favourite event may spark the slight improvement required to land a big payday.

Mike Norman: Back Ryan Moore @ 34.033/1

From tee-to-green few players on the PGA Tour are as accurate as Ryan Moore, and on a course where finding fairways and greens won't do you any harm whatsoever I give the consistent American a huge chance this week. Moore has recorded four top-10 finishes in his last six starts on Tour including a victory at the CIMB Classic, and he's previously finished fourth at Riviera so he ticks both the current form and course form boxes. But it's Moore's ball-striking stats that really catch the eye - seventh on Tour for Driving Accuracy this season, fourth for Greens in Regulation, and second for Proximity to Hole, meaning that just a good week with the putter will surely see him in contention come Sunday afternoon.

Steve Rawlings: Back Charl Schwartzel @ 36.035/1

South Africans, who have grown up playing on the rarely encountered kikuyu grass, are worth careful consideration at Riviera. Ernie Els and Rory Sabbatini have both taken the title here and Charl Schwartzel can emulate them this week. Major winners have a great record in this classic old event and the 2011 US Masters winner looks well worth chancing at 36.035/1. He made his tournament debut 12 months ago, when he really should have finished higher than his promising tied third and I can easily see him in-the-mix again this time around.
