Abu Dhabi Championship 2017: Four selections to hold the first round lead

Has Danny Willett's Masters hangover gone?

Dan Geraghty picked out Bryson Dechambeau to lead after round one here last year at 100/1, he selects another four to back in round one this week...

"Danny Willett suffered a bit of a hangover from his wonderful Masters success but he looked to be getting back on track when we last saw him in Hong Kong (6th). The likeable Englishman has been in Abu Dhabi for over a week preparing for the new season."

The PGA Tour's CareerBuilder Challenge is using three courses, so this week I'm taking a look at the European Tour's Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship.

At this stage, the weather forecast - as is often the case - clearly favours the morning starters, so that makes my job easier. I've drawn a line through half of the field.

First up, I'll select my each-way column pick Ryan Fox. Fox has been handed an 8:20am tee time with Dylan Frittelli and Callum Shinkwin.

I always like to keep an eye on Paul Dunne in these first round markets, the Irishman has run away with a couple of one day qualifying events, showcasing his ability to go lowest on day one/one day. This week's event is clearly of a higher standard but Dunne showed he can certainly compete at the highest level with his performance at the 2015 Open Championship, which he led going into round four; a 64 is a 64. He was in better form at the end of last year and his early tee time catches my eye.

Danny Willett suffered a bit of a hangover from his wonderful Masters success but he looked to be getting back on track when we last saw him in Hong Kong (sixth). The likeable Englishman has been in Abu Dhabi for over a week preparing for the new season and his dip in form last season means he's available at a backable price for his seasonal bow.

Jordan L Smith was peerless at the top of the Europro Tour rankings in 2015 and peerless at the top of the Challenge Tour rankings last year. The young Englishman showed the 2017 European Tour holds no fears for him as he finished third on his 2017 debut last week to climb to a career high 93rd in the world rankings. Back him to follow up that performance here.
