Mark Wilson leads the Honda Classic by one stroke going into the final round after his second successive four-under-par 66 on Saturday.
The American jumped above 34-year-old compatriot Boo Weekley at the top of the leader-board at Palm Beach Gardens in Florida when he fired a birdie putt at the 18th to add to his other three, an eagle and two bogeys. If Wilson, who is ranked 265th in the world, can stay top throughout Sunday's fourth round he will secure a first PGA Tour win in 110 tournaments.
He said: "If I can walk off that final green and know I'll be exempt through 2009, it'll be just a great feeling. But it's more about the journey, enjoying the whole journey that I've gone on.
"I played in the 1991 PGA Junior here, for instance. And here I am, 16 years later, with a chance to win on the PGA Tour."
Weekley, who claimed his best career finish of sixth in Mexico last week, is shocked to be hot on the heels of Wilson at this stage of the event.
He said: "When I played the practice round, I didn't think I had a chance. The golf course, I didn't think it was set up for me real well."
Sweden's Daniel Chopra is two shots off the lead after shooting a 68, while joint overnight leaders South Korean Charlie Wi and Australian Robert Allenby are three and four shots off the pace respectively.
Wilson is now the favourite at 4.5 to win in Florida, while Weekley is available at 6.6.
Chopra can be backed at 6.4, while Wi and Allenby are on offer at 18.5 and 11 respectively.
