Sidebottom keen to outdo father

Ryan Sidebottom is hoping to throw off the family's one-cap wonder tag after being called up to the England squad for the second Test with the West Indies at Headingley.

Sidebottom's father Arnie made just one Test appearance for the national side - against Australia back in 1985 - before being jettisoned after taking just one wicket in the match, that of leg-spinner Bob Holland.

Sidebottom junior's career appeared to be following a similar path, with a disappointing, wicket-less Test debut against Pakistan in 2001 seemingly set to be his only five-day appearance for England.

But Matthew Hoggard's thigh injury and Andrew Flintoff's ongoing ankle problems have opened the door for the Nottinghamshire left-armer to make his second appearance in an England Test shirt six years after his debut.

Being part of the one-Test club has never bothered the Sidebottom family but the younger version is hoping to shake off the tag on Friday.

"We still have a laugh about the one-cap thing," he said. "It's been part of the family. But
he's always said that I might outdo him."

And the 29-year-old feels he can provide options for Andrew Strauss' side at his former stamping ground in Leeds.

"I add variety, being a left-arm swing bowler," he added. "My consistency and line have improved and I've worked hard on my swing. It normally swings at Headingley and West Indies won't have faced a left-armer."

England were thwarted by the weather at Lord's but Betfair customers feel they should have enough to beat the tourists in Yorkshire, with the hosts trading at 2.22, Ramnaresh Sarwan's men on offer at 11.5 and the draw available at 2.12.

England are even shorter to win the series and can be backed at 1.29, while the Windies trade at 11 and a drawn series is on offer at 7.
