The 38-year-old fired an impressive 65 on Thursday to leave him on -6, giving Kresge a two shot advantage over the field.

Sweden's Daniel Chopra is in a group of four players on -4, along with American trio Arron Oberholser, Anthony Kim and Doug LaBelle II.

There are a further seven players sitting on -3, including Swede Jesper Parnevik and US pair Matt Kuchar and Joey Sindelar, after carding opening rounds of 68.

Last year's Open championship runner-up Chris DiMarco is among a big group of players on -2, with Spain's Sergio Garcia five shots off the pace on -1.

Vijay Singh, who was the outright favourite before the opening round, also shot a round of 70 to leave him at -1.

The Fijian is joined by Oberholser (14) at the head of the win market, with South Africa's Trevor Immelman, currently on -2, next best at 15.5.

Leader Kresge is currently trading at 17.5, while European duo Chopra and Garcia are available at 22.
