The South Carolina course was rocked by winds which blew balls around on the greens, while a falling branch left tournament official William Millon injured, but not seriously.

Kelly is on 13 under, one shot ahead of South African Ernie Els and Kevin Na, who had only hit their approach shots to the first green when play was called off and they were sent back to the clubhouse. Indeed the first players to start their final round had only managed to play eight holes when the action ended.

"It got dangerous out there for spectators and was unplayable," said PGA tournament director Slugger White.

The disruption mirrors that of the 2001 tournament when it was forced to play over into Monday and Jose Coceres defeated Billy Mayfair in a play-off.

Kelly can be backed at 3.55 to win the tournament, with the chasing pack of Els and Na available at 2.84 and 9.6 respectively.
