West Brom v Everton: Big Sam to keep bandwagon rolling for Toffees

Sam Allardyce gained another good result with Saturday's goalless draw against Chelsea
Sam Allardyce gained another good result with Saturday's goalless draw against Chelsea

Andrew Atherley expects another positive result for Everton in the Boxing Day clash at the Hawthorns...

"Allardyce already has Everton better organised, with four clean sheets in six games where he has been in the dugout, and that is going to make life difficult for the low-scoring Baggies."

Winless run stands at 18

West Brom remain 19th after Saturday's 3-1 defeat at Stoke and are now three points from safety, having failed to win in five games for Alan Pardew since he replaced Tony Pulis. Their winless run now stretches to a club record 18 games in all competitions.

Pardew badly needs some pace and creativity but was dealt another blow on Saturday when Nacer Chadli's return to the side lasted barely a quarter of an hour before he suffered a recurrence of his thigh problem.

Illness and injury

Everton stood firm for a goalless draw at home to Chelsea on Saturday, stretching their unbeaten run to seven in all competitions since Sam Allardyce's appointment as manager.

Wayne Rooney missed the game with flu and the defence was also disrupted by illness. Ashley Williams and Mason Holgate were both on the bench, with Michael Keane and Phil Jagielka given their first starts under Allardyce, although Williams was able to join the rearguard action for the second half.

Yannick Bolasie was back in the squad as an unused sub after recovering from a long-term knee injury, but there was an injury blow when Idrissa Gueye had to go off in the second half.

Everton hard to beat

West Brom have won only one of their nine matches at the Hawthorns - the lowest home win tally in the Premier League - but they have been competitive, with five draws and just three defeats.

Most of the good results have been against fellow strugglers and their home record against top-half teams is W0 D1 L3, all with at least two goals conceded.

Pardew still has not found a solution to their problems in attack, with just two goals scored in his five games, and his only points came in goalless draws against Crystal Palace at home and Liverpool away.

Allardyce already has Everton better organised, with four clean sheets in six games where he has been in the dugout, and that is going to make life difficult for the low-scoring Baggies.

Even before Allardyce's arrival, Everton were compiling a strong record against bottom-half teams and it now stands at W6 D2 L1.

This is a match where the fans will be looking for the new boss to be more adventurous and allow his players to impose their quality on the hosts.

If he releases the brakes on their attacking play, Everton could prove an excellent value bet at 3.1511/5.

But there is the niggling thought that Allardyce will continue to err on the side of caution and that points more towards the draw no bet as the best option at 2.186/5. There is also plenty of value in that bet.

Cautious Sam

West Brom rank joint-third for games with under 2.5 goals (12 out of 19), although the split is closer to even against top-half teams (unders in five out of nine).

Again this market revolves around how adventurous Everton are, although the evidence so far indicates caution as Allardyce has had under 2.5 goals in four of his five league games in charge (the exception being the 3-1 home win over bottom club Swansea).

Ref Watch

Roger East has taken charge of eight Premier League matches this season and five of them have had at least 40 bookings points, putting him near the top of the card charts.

Opta Stat
The Baggies have lost their last three home Premier League games against Everton, last beating them at the Hawthorns in September 2012 (2-0). Everton are 3.1511/5 for the win.
