Transfer Window Analysis: Chelsea

Paris bound? David Luiz has been linked with a move to PSG

Christian Crowther looks at the potential comings and goings which will mark Jose Mourinho's second coming...

"Rumours linking Luiz with a move to Paris St-Germain to hook up with Brazil team-mate Thiago Silva have been anything but subdued; it just depends what new manager Laurent Blanc has to say on the matter."

Will they have much to spend?
The Premier League's original oligarch has never been shy to dust off the old wallet since taking ownership of Chelsea a decade ago. Claims from Roman Abramovich in 2006 that Chelsea's exuberant spending would decrease in subsequent years to offset heavy losses have since been dispelled by other notable splurges. Breaking the £20 million mark to bring in a player at Chelsea is par for the course thanks to Abramovich's fortune and generosity.

Have they done any business yet?
Mourinho's first bit of business was to oversee the signing of Bayer Leverkusen forward Andre Schurrle, a player Chelsea were known to be coveting for the last year, for £18 million. However, despite being linked with high-profile stars such as Edinson Cavani, Stevan Jovetic and Edin Dzeko to name but a few, no other deals are done at present. It's almost impossible to imagine that the team ranked joint second-favourites at 3.45 alongside Manchester United to win the title in 2013/14, will not add a couple more though.

What do they need?
There was far too much reliance on Fernando Torres to lead the line last season and, while Schurrle can operate in a central role, he is just as likely to be played out wide. Demba Ba provides a worthy alternative to Torres, but a club of Chelsea's stature will be looking to bring in another out-and-out front man with a world-class reputation. If rumours are to be believed linking David Luiz with a move away then centre-back will also be position in need of strengthening.

Who would be a good fit?
The obvious one is Cavani. The Uruguayan ticks all the boxes but his vast transfer fee, and competition from the likes of Manchester City for his signature, could spoil any advances. If City were successful, then Dzeko makes an interesting possibility, as he is in the same physical mould as Cavani and proven in the Premier League. However, in Romelu Lukaku, Chelsea may just be harbouring a world-class striker in the making and Mourinho has already indicated that he is keen to make the most of his resources.

Is there anyone they'll struggle to keep?
In light of some fairly lukewarm praise from his new boss, the market on Torres being at Stamford Bridge next season has the Spaniard at 1.910/11 to leave this summer. However, speculation about any prospective suitors has so far been fairly subdued. Meanwhile, rumours linking Luiz with a move to Paris St-Germain to hook up with Brazil team-mate Thiago Silva have been anything but subdued; it just depends what new manager Laurent Blanc has to say on the matter.
