Next Permanent Manchester United Manager
(Betfair Sportsbook as of 11:00)
Manchester United have this morning sacked Jose Mourinho; Michael Carrick has been appointed interim manager immediately, while the club have announced that a temporary external appointment will be made within the next 48 hours.
Mourinho leaves the club after two and a half years in charge following a disastrous start to the 2018/19 season which sees United trailing bitter rivals Liverpool by a massive 19 points as well as being 11 points off fourth-placed Chelsea.
Worst start ever to a Premier League season
Sunday's 3-1 defeat to Liverpool means Mourinho was in charge of a United team that has made the worst start to a Premier League season ever, amassing just 26 points from 17 league games.
United were also dumped out of the EFL Cup by Championship side Derby, and although they qualified for the Champions League knock-out phase, they drifted in that particular market following Monday's draw that saw them pitched against Ligue 1 leaders PSG.
"The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future", United said in a statement.
The sacking means that Mourinho continues his record of never managing a football club into a fourth season.
Been here before
Mourinho's departure comes almost three years to the day that he was sacked by Chelsea and the reasons behind both sackings have huge similarities, notably player fall-outs, losing the dressing room, and poor results.
The former Porto, Inter Milan and Real Madrid boss had some high profile fall-outs during his time at Old Trafford, most significantly with record signing Paul Pogba, while his constant criticising of players and team performances in public also caused ructions. Eyebrows were raised at a now deleted Pogba Instagram post (below) although it was probably a scheduled message.
Despite all this the The Portuguese, 55, won the League Cup and the Europa League at Old Trafford as well as finishing runners-up in the Premier League to neighbours Manchester City last season.
Zidane and Conte the early favourites to take over
Both the Betfair Sportsbook and Exchange have markets for who will be the Next Permanent Manchester United Manager (any person taking charge for 10 consecutive games will be deemed the winner) and former United man Laurent Blanc has been heavily backed this morning, into odds-on at 11:40. Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane and former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte were the early favourites.
Zidane is the marginal favourite on the Sportsbook at 5/2, with Conte at 7/2, Ryan Giggs 6/1, Michael Carrick 8/1, and Arsene Wenger 10/1.
Inter next for Jose?
We have a 'Jose Mourinho Next Club' market live and a return to Inter Milan is the favourite, rated as an 11/4 chance. The Portuguese is 7/2 to take on the national team role in his home country, while 'any Chinese club' is trading at 9/1.
