A tendency to lose in England means that it will be Porto to the rescue for the under-fire Chelsea chief...

Chelsea

The Blues languish just two points above the Premier League relegation zone, having lost eight of 15 matches as part of a comic attempt at defending their title.

It is a turn of events that has left boss Jose Mourinho's hopes of seeing out his freshly-inked four-year contract circling the drain, but winning Champions League Group G will provide some desperately-needed relief. Victory over Porto, which would make it three wins from as many home games in the continent's premier competition, will ensure this happens.

He will have to make do without captain John Terry in a game where defeat will almost certainly lead to their elimination and, subsequently, Mourinho's sacking, but one telling stat (which we'll discuss later) says the west Londoners will cope just fine without their skipper.

Porto

It appears the blueprint to beating Chelsea at Stamford Bridge has been leaked online and, as though they were some saucy celeb snaps, everyone's had a butcher's.

After watching little old Bournemouth plunder the points from the Blues' once-impregnable stronghold, the Dragons will be as fearless as the mythical beast with which they share a moniker when travelling to the English capital. Furthermore, they have won five straight away matches across all competitions by way of preparation, conceding an accumulated one goal across this spell.

However, Blighty has proved a battleground where many a fire-breathing beast has met their maker, as Porto know all too well.

Match Odds

No Porto side ever assembled, including Mourinho's band of probability-defying 2003/04 Champions League winners, have won at the home of an English outfit.

They have attempted to right this particular wrong on 15 occasions, 13 of which have ended in tears. Their last two setbacks saw nine goals conceded with none scored in return, while Chelsea have been the beneficiaries of the Dragoes' inability to prevail on these shores no fewer than three times.

While their away form ahead of this trip is respectable, it's worth noting that their defence is culpable for the only goal Maccabi Tel Aviv has bagged in the competition this term.

It will have to stand much stronger to stop a Chelsea team who have only twice relinquished the spoils in a Champions League group-stage home game from winning.

Over 2.5 Goals

Ascertaining just how and why there's an odds-against offering up for grabs about backing this game to cross the goal line in question at 2.3211/8 is a conundrum tough enough to grant instant Mensa membership.

All bar one of Chelsea's Champions League matches so far have contained a minimum of three goals, including the corresponding fixture against Porto, whose travelling fans have seen the net bulge at least four times in both their away trips in this competition too.

As if more convincing was required, this is also a bet that would have landed in six of the past seven voyages the Dragons have made to English shores, as well as in five of their past eight road games across all competitions.
