Arsenal and Liverpool played out a 0-0 draw at the Emirates Stadium with goalkeepers Peter Cech and Simon Mignolet in top form.

Cech pulled off his first of two exceptional saves on 39 minutes when he bravely got down to save from Benteke after the Belgian hit-man had been teed up in front of goal by Roberto Firmino.

Liverpool arrived looking to maintain their 100% start to the season which had also heralded two clean sheets.

And they should have been in front by the half time break having enjoyed the upper hand in the opening period only to be denied by Cech who started paying off some of the big transfer fee the Gunners forked out to Chelsea for his signature in the summer.

Arsenal, who had looked shaky in the first half without their two first-choice central defenders Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny, improved greatly after the break but they could not find a way through as Mignolet also produced a couple of good stops.

The draw leaves Arsenal without a win in their opening two home games of the season while Liverpool are in third spot with seven points and have yet to concede a goal so far this term.

Philippe Coutinho went close to putting Liverpool ahead as early as the third minute when he was teed up by Christian Benteke from the right but his effort hit off the underside of the crossbar before the hosts cleared their lines.

Arsenal hit back and thought they had taken the lead in the eighth minute but Aaron Ramsey was harshly flagged offside when he tucked the ball under Mignolet after getting on the end of Santi Cazorla's defence-splitting pass.

Francis Coquelin then rescued his team-mate Calum Chambers on 14 minutes when he denied Coutinho a shot at goal after he pounced on the young stopper's horrendous clearance just outside the area.

Gabriel then had to race back to deny Coutinho on 33 minutes after the Brazilian had beaten the offside trap and raced through at goal.

Cech pulled off his first of two exceptional saves on 39 minutes when he bravely got down to save from Benteke after the Belgian hit-man had been teed up in front of goal by Roberto Firmino.

Cech then got across his area to block a close-range Firmino effort at his near post from the right of the area when the following corner was not fully cleared.

The Czech veteran's second top drawer save was in the final minute of the half when he got his finger tips to a Coutinho right-foot strike to divert it away from the far corner of the net and off the far post.

Arsenal looked a different team after the interval and hit the woodwork on the hour through Alexis Sanchez from the left of the area after he was set up by Olivier Giroud.

Giroud, in his 100th Premier League appearance for Arsenal, was guilty of missing a couple of opportunities inside the area, before he managed to get a shot off at goal while going to ground in the middle of the box and forced a decent save out of Mignolet on 70 minutes.

At the other end from James Milner and Coutinho both tested Cech, before Mignolet again produced a good stop when a Ramsey effort took a big deflection off Dejan Lovren on its way through to goal on 83 minutes.

A minute later substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain whipped in a dangerous low cross and Martin Skrtel somehow managed to divert the ball wide of his far post.

Mignolet had the final word deep into four minutes of injury time when he pushed a low Oxlade-Chamberlain effort wide of the post.
