Wayne Rooney's hat-trick helped Manchester United defeat Club Brugge 4-0 and book their place in the Champions League group stage draw.

Any hopes of a Club Brugge fightback in the second half were dashed on 49 minutes when Rooney was handed a simple tap-in after Herrara squared to him at the back post following more good build up play involving Depay.

The England international striker had yet to score so far this season, but having put Louis van Gaal's side ahead in this second leg at the Jan Breydel Stadion in Belgium, he grabbed two more after the break to further build on the 3-1 first leg lead brought into the game from last week's first leg at Old Trafford.

Ander Herrara made it 4-0 for a 7-1 aggregate victory, although it should have been a wider margin of success after substitute Javier Hernandez missed a late penalty.

Club Brugge started brightly as they looked to grab an early goal to cut United's first leg advantage.

However United always looked a threat on the break and they went ahead in the 20th minute when Memphis Depay cut inside form the left and looked set to get a shot at goal before picking out Rooney in the box and he lifted his effort over the advancing home keeper Sinan Bolat.

Depay almost got in for a second on 29 minutes when Rooney chipped a great ball into the area for him, but brave goalkeeping by Bolat denied him.

Five minutes later Depay used his strength to outmuscle Jean-Charles Costelletto before charging into the area only for Oscar Duarte to get in a crucial block when he delayed his shot at goal.

Luke Shaw's strong run and pass to Rooney saw him tee up Depay but this time his deflected shot from outside the area was well held by Bolat.

Club Brugge played some good football to set up Tom De Sutter on 41 minutes but his fierce strike from the edge of the area was parried into the air by United keeper Sergio Romero who gathered at the second attempt.

Abdoulaye Diaby spurned the hosts best chance two minutes before the interval when he beat the offside trap but took too long over his shot which allowed Romero to get a hand to the ball and then the defence got back to block Boli Bolingoli Mbombo's follow up effort.

The hat-trick was completed on 57 minutes when Juan Mata picked out Rooney's run down the right side of the area and he fired past Bolat.

Rooney will have been disappointed not to have added a fourth within a minute when he went clean through on goal but this time Bolat got a hand to divert his little chip wide of the post.

Herrara did make it 4-0 on 63 minutes when he was played in on goal by substitute Bastian Schweinsteiger's lovely through ball and coolly slotted his effort past Bolat.

Club Brugge were completely out of the game but substitute Hans Vanaken almost grabbed a consolation goal on 65 minutes but his dipping strike came out via the under side of the crossbar with Romero beaten.

United then missed a great chance to add a fifth goal on 81 minutes when Duarte was harshly adjudged to have handled in the area despite the ball bouncing off his arm after he had initially blocked a Rooney cross with his head.

However Hernandez slipped as he took the kick and the ball flew wide of the post having hit off both of the Mexican striker's feet.

Hernandez was guilty of another miss in stoppage time when he met an Ashley Young cross from the right at the back post but scooped his close-range shot over the top.
