Serie A betting: Back goals at Genoa and Verona and Fiorentina to increase Rafa's woes

Paul-Jose M’Poku and Cagliari should deliver goals for the third week running
Paul-Jose M’Poku and Cagliari should deliver goals for the third week running

Dave Farrar is back with his regular weekend preview of Serie A, and he expects Fiorentina to beat Rafa Benitez's Napoli, Inter to leak goals in Verona and Zdenek Zeman to deliver goals again...

“Since Zdenek Zeman returned to replace Gianfranco Zola, the Sardinians have reverted to type, and we've successfully backed over 3.5 goals in their last two games.”

Genoa v Cagliari
Saturday, 17:00

Let's get the predictable tip out of the way first: Cagliari beat Genoa 2-1 here last season and need something similar to happen if they're to stay in touch with safety. Genoa are 2.01/1 to win this, and while that seems short for a team in such poor form, I haven't got enough faith in Cagliari to tip them to win here.

One thing that we can be sure of, though, is that Cagliari will come to attack. Since Zdenek Zeman returned to replace Gianfranco Zola, the Sardinians have reverted to type, and we've successfully backed over 3.5 goals in their last two games.

There's a slight worry that Genoa are a little shot shy (any team that relies on an ageing Marco Borriello is bound to be), but I believe that Cagliari's approach draws teams out, and we may see a more positive Genoa at Marassi, mainly because they'll have to be.

Zeman has been good to us for two weeks, I'm backing Cagliari to play on the front foot and make it three.

Recommended Bet: Back over 3.5 Goals in Genoa v Cagliari @ 3.02/1

Napoli v Fiorentina
Sunday, 14:00

I was caught out by opposing Fiorentina last weekend, and they travel to the San Paolo with a big chance of turning over Napoli. Both of these teams have Europa League tests to come this week, and so there may be an element of rotation about both XIs, but La Viola still look too big to prevail at 4.03/1.

Napoli haven't won in five league games, and that's been a huge disappointment for Rafa Benitez. He looks likely to leave the club at the end of the season, and in recent weeks his reputation as a manager who concentrates on winning trophies (i.e. cups) has been reinforced. Napoli have the look of a side who have put the Europa League above everything.

Both of these teams will be smarting after midweek Coppa Italia semi final exits against Juve and Lazio, but Fiorentina look to me to be the significantly stronger side. They're powerful away from home too, having beaten Inter, Juve and Roma on their travels in recent weeks.

There's a slight doubt about which teams will make it onto the field, but Fiorentina are the ones who really believe that they can catch Lazio in third, and their defensive strength may just strangle Napoli, silence the crowd, and edge the win.

Recommended Bet: Back Fiorentina to beat Napoli @ 4.03/1

Verona v Inter
Saturday, 19:45
Live on BT Sport Extra

We could be in for a fun Saturday night at the Bentegodi as Verona host Inter. Put simply, Hellas are fighting to get away from the relegation zone, and Inter are dreadful. In fact, if Verona win this, they'll be only two points behind the Nerazzurri.

We can't go into Inter's failings in depth here, but one of them is defending with any confidence. Verona are in great attacking form, and I expect goals here as they and Luca Toni find a way to create and finish, while Inter's attacking trident enjoy life on the counter.

This has all the hallmarks of Inter's trip to Napoli a few weeks back, with the two sides seemingly matched up to produce an open game. That one finished 2-2, and this could well end in similar fashion.

Recommended Bet: Back Over 3.5 Goals in Verona v Inter @ 3.211/5
