The Goalscorer Gamble: Back Welbeck to strike first

Can Danny Welbeck add to his tally when Manchester United face Swansea?
Can Danny Welbeck add to his tally when Manchester United face Swansea?

After a Christmas break, Dan Fitch is back with more goalscoring tips and fancies Danny Welbeck to get Manchester United off to a good start against Swansea.

"The Viola look a good bet to grab the fourth Champions League spot in Italy this season and chiefly responsible is Giuseppe Rossi, who is Serie A’s top scorer with 14 goals."

Back Rossi to score at 1.910/11..

Christmas and New Year are officially over, 2014 is in full swing and slowly but surely, those lazy Europeans are getting back into action after their cushy little winter break.

Which means that the Goalscorer Gamble is back in business. We start in the FA Cup third round with the match between Southampton and Burnley.

This game will see Southampton's Jay Rodriguez line up against his former club and he'll do doubt be keen to show them just why he's been deemed worthy of an England cap this season.

Rodriguez has scored five goals in his last nine games and even against a mean Burnley defence, looks great value at 2.427/5 to score in a game that Southampton should win.

Next we move to the all Premier League clash between Manchester United and Swansea. United have been without Robin van Persie in recent weeks but they've hardly missed him as Danny Welbeck stepped up to the plate.

Welbeck has a poor goalscoring record but in his defence he very often finds himself playing wide and has rarely had a run of games playing as United's central striker.

This run has come in recent weeks and Welbeck has proved himself up to the job with four goals in his last six games. On Sunday he faces a Swansea side that have failed to keep a clean sheet in seven games. Back the England striker to score first at odds likely to be close to 6.3.

To Spain now where the La Liga title race gets underway again. On Sunday Barcelona look likely to record a routine home victory over a struggling Elche side that are just two points outside of the relegation zone.

Without greedy old Lionel Messi hogging the ball, Barcelona have shared out the goals in recent weeks, with the likes of Neymar, Cesc Fabregas and Pedro getting in on the action.

It is Pedro that interests me this week. He scored a hat-trick in Barcelona's 5-2 away win at Getafe just before the winter break and is now Barca's top league scorer this season with ten goals.

Pedro has scored seven goals in his last four starts in all competitions and odds of 1.9420/21 for him to add to his tally look generous.

Another wide player in good goalscoring form is Celtic's Kris Commons. He has also scored ten league goals this seasons and has a total of 15 in 28 games in all competitions.

The goals haven't exactly flowed for Celtic in recent weeks, as they've recorded narrow victories, but they should fancy their chances against a St Mirren side that are in the bottom-half of the Scottish Premiership. Let's take a chance on Commons at likely odds of 5.04/1 to score the last goal.

Back to mainland Europe and the Italians are also returning from their midwinter break, albeit reluctantly. Most of them aren't bothering to put their boots back on until Monday, but one of the few matches taking place before then sees fourth-placed Fiorentina take on relegation-bound Livorno.

The Viola look a good bet to grab the fourth Champions League spot in Italy this season and chiefly responsible is Giuseppe Rossi, who is Serie A's top scorer with 14 goals.

Rossi has delivered the bacon more than once for the column this season and comes into this game having scored in his previous two games before the Christmas break.

Fiorentina should win comfortably against a Livorno team currently second from bottom of Serie A, with Rossi likely to be priced at around 1.910/11 to score.
