Spartak struggling after title win
While many of the opening group games in the Champions League will feature sides that have only just started their seasons, this match features two teams that are already pretty deep into their campaigns.
The Slovenian champions Maribor have made an unbeaten start to the defence of their title, winning five of their eight games. They've also played six Champions League qualifying ties to reach the group stage of the competition.
Spartak are having a tougher time in their defence of last season's domestic championship. After nine games in the Russian Premier League they are eighth, with an erratic record of three wins, three draws and three defeats.
Their manager Massimo Carrera masterminded their title win in his first season in charge, Spartak's first since 2001. The Italian was previously the assistant manager to Antonio Conte at both Juventus and Italy.
Maribor look to be underestimated
When Maribor last played in the group stage of the Champions League in 2014, they did themselves proud, winning one and drawing three of their six games, which included tough opponents in the shape of Chelsea, Schalke and Sporting Lisbon.
With it being five years since Spartak graced the competition and with the current side struggling a little domestically, the visitors look too short at [1.93] to taste victory. The price seems based on the supposed superiority of Russian teams, but Zenit St Petersburg remain the only club from the nation to have qualified from the group stage over the past five seasons.
The draw is tempting at [3.55], but to play it safe back Maribor in the Double Chance market at [2.06].
