Home and Away: A Capital One Cup double

Pablo Osvaldo is set for his full debut at Oakwell

Jonno Turner picks the value out of two domestic cup ties today...

We're off to South Yorkshire for our first pick of the day - and it's the Capital One Cup tie between Barnsley and Southampton at Oakwell.

Barnsley line up for this clash in the midst of an inconsistent start to the new campaign, and no league wins so far leaves them in last position - propping up the rest of the sides in the Championship.

And a 5-2 thrashing at Blackburn Rovers at the weekend suggests that the hosts have weaknesses in their backline which need fixing, or they could be in for a long, hard slog.

Boss David Flitcroft will be keen for his side to secure a scalp here in order to kick start their season, but the Tykes struggled through the previous round of this competition - needing penalties to dispose of League Two Scunthorpe United, and that suggests that they may come unstuck against a Southampton side buoyed by events in recent weeks.

Mauro Pochettino's side have made some stellar signings over the summer in order to build on a successful first season back in the big time, and club record capture Pablo Osvaldo is expected to make his first start for the Saints in this clash.

The away side are unbeaten in their opening two encounters this campaign, and Pochettino will not be underestimating the effect that a humiliating loss would have on the momentum his side has shown of late.

For that reason, I expect the Argentinian to put out a strong side in this game. Morgan Schneiderlin and Luke Shaw are expected to miss out through injury - but the Saints don't have the biggest squad, and will be keen to secure their passage to the next round of this competition in order to give themselves a realistic chance of some silverware, a la Swansea last campaign.

Southampton are unbeaten in seven of their last 10 on the road - and I reckon they'll be too strong for a Barnsley side who, frankly, may have bigger things to worry about this season.

Staying in this competition now, but shifting our attentions to action at London Road - as an in-form Peterborough United side welcome Reading to their patch.

The hosts have begun the season in style - smashing 17 goals in their first five outings - and currently sit pretty at the top of League One with a 100% record this campaign.

Darren Ferguson's side have looked unplayable at times, and will be desperate to maintain that momentum as they eye an instant return to the second tier.

A 5-0 thrashing of Tranmere at the weekend will have boosted confidence in the Posh camp, and suggests that the home side are so lethal in the final third that Reading will need to be on their guard here.

The visitors travel to this game without a win in three, and will be desperate to avoid becoming a lower league scalp.

But Nigel Adkins is missing three key players - Jimmy Kebe, Mikele Leigertwood and Jason Roberts - and is set to give three more their first starts of the season, which suggests that he could go with an experimental line up here.

A 1-0 loss at Blackpool on Saturday will have hit the Royals hard as they eye promotion back to the big time this campaign, and just one win on the road in 10 outings suggests that travel sickness has a real grip on the away side here.
