Millwall host Crawley Town in the first round of the English League Cup at 19:45 this evening and the home side are odds-on to progress in 90 minutes. Paul Robinson believes that Crawley could spring a surprise though.
Millwall finished 16th in the Championship last season and they are amongst the favourites to be relegated this time around. It promises to be a tough campaign for Kenny Jackett's outfit and they will need to be strong at The Den in order to survive. That wasn't something that they were able to achieve in the latter half of last year though as the Lions fell to eight home defeats in their final 14 fixtures. While they have got some wins under their belt in pre-season, they haven't really faced strong opposition, and the one loss came against tonight's opponents. Furthermore, Millwall are suffering a bit of a defensive crisis and veteran defender, Danny Shittu has had to be drafted in to bolster the backline.
Crawley Town are a club on the up after back to back promotions and now find themselves in League One. The Reds do have a new manager at the helm though after Sean O'Driscoll left for Nottingham Forest earlier in the summer. Richie Barker was given the role and he will be looking to get off to a flying start tonight and continue the momentum of the past two years. While the teams they faced last season were of a lower standard to Millwall, Crawley fell to just seven away defeats in 28 games in all competitions, so that coupled with the aforementioned victory over today's opposition should fill the players with confidence.
The English League cup throws up shocks and surprises every year and it will be no different this time around. Despite Millwall being a division higher than Crawley, The Reds are on the up and could well get a positive result tonight. Millwall are far too short at 1.981/1 and I have to make them my lay of the day.
