Michael Lintorn explains why betting on an even number of goals makes sense in Sporting CP v Borussia Dortmund...
"Dortmund's run featuring in fixtures with an even number of goals now stretches to seven."
Sporting CP 3.45 v Borussia Dortmund 2.226/5; The Draw 3.7511/4
Live on BT Sport Extra
Borussia Dortmund won their opening Group F away game 6-0 at Legia Warsaw and are favourites to go two for two in Portugal, but they are not at their best right now.
If the 2-2 draw with Real Madrid that interrupted a four-match winning streak graced by 20 goals was excusable, the 2-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen and 1-1 home draw with Hertha Berlin were not so much and the consequence is that they have dropped to fifth in the Bundesliga.
Even without that form increasing doubt, there would have been question marks over their ability to beat Sporting CP in Lisbon. Jorge Jesus' side might not have dismissed Legia quite as emphatically (2-0), yet it was their ninth successive triumph in front of their fans across all competitions.
The hosts also exceeded expectations prior to that when they visited holders Real Madrid in week one, with it taking two goals in the closing two minutes to turn their 1-0 lead into a 2-1 deficit, so odds of 3.45 on them prevailing are rather intriguing.
Odd or Even
The one thing that has remained consistent about Dortmund as results have faltered is their run featuring in fixtures with an even number of goals, with that now stretching to seven.
It doesn't matter if they win (5-1, 3-1 and 6-0 twice), lose (2-0) or draw (2-2 and 1-1), they always seem to settle on something even. Sporting CP have the same tendency, going even in four of their past five outings courtesy of a 1-3, 4-2, 2-0 and 3-3.
