Schalke improving, Galatasaray in a slump
Schalke claimed a valuable draw in Turkey in the reverse fixture two weeks ago, which has kickstarted a return to some form.
After a poor start to the season Schalke are slowly climbing away from the foot of the Bundesliga table. They are now unbeaten in four games and have only lost one of their last eight (W4 D3). Their Champions League campaign has been much steadier, with the German side unbeaten in three games (W1 D2), which has put them into second place in Group D.
Just a point behind Schalke are Galatasaray. They will be disappointed at drawing 0-0 with Schalke at the Turk Telekom Stadium, as their home form was always likely to be key to their hopes of making the knockout stages of the Champions League.
Fatih Terim's side are in something of a slump at the moment. They have only won one of their last six games (D3 L2) and let a two goal lead slip at home to their rivals Fenerbahce on Friday, in a typically bad tempered derby in which three players were sent off (two for Gala).
Another slow start from Schalke
Schalke deserve to be favourites given their home advantage, but they are much too short, despite their recent revival.
Goals are still proving to be relatively rare commodities for Schalke. They have not scored in the first-half of any of their last seven games. With Galatasaray having kept two clean sheets in Group D and conceding no goals before the break, this could be another cagey encounter. Back the 0-0 half-time score at [2.88].
