Bayern Munich v PSV: Out-of-sorts PSV won't exploit Bayern frailties

Successive draws have left PSV nine points adrift of the Eredivisie summit
Successive draws have left PSV nine points adrift of the Eredivisie summit

This is a good time to be facing Bayern Munich, but PSV aren't playing well enough to take advantage...

"Man City and Arsenal were the only of Bayern Munich's previous ten first-round guests to avoid a loss to nil, while PSV were shut out in three of their last four trips abroad."

Some teams get all the luck. If Bayern Munich slacked off at any point last season, they would have been punished because of how doggedly Borussia Dortmund were pursuing them in the Bundesliga.

This season, they haven't performed to the same level under Carlo Ancelotti, with the drop in standards finally showing in the last four encounters as they scraped a late victory at lowly Hamburg were beaten by Atletico Madrid in Europe and held by Koln and Frankfurt in the league, yet there is nobody to capitalise and they remain two points clear of Koln and RB Leipzig at the top.

PSV are likely to continue the theme because, while there has rarely felt like a better time to visit the Allianz Arena, the Dutch champions don't appear primed to capitalise, winning just twice in seven games and drawing the most recent three against Rostov, Heerenveen and Heracles.

They are winless in eight Champions League away days in the tournament proper, suffering eight defeats in 12, while Bayern have won seven straight home group ties, the latest four by margins of four goals or more.

Bayern Munich Win to Nil

As emphasised above, Bayern's form makes them seem a less reliable bet than usual, but try to resist odds above evens on them triumphing without conceding as hosts in the group stage given that they have done precisely that in six of their past seven such assignments.

Indeed, Manchester City and Arsenal were the only of the five-time winners' previous ten first-round guests to avoid a loss to nil, while PSV were shut out in three of their last four trips abroad.
