As Luiz Suarez makes his competitive return with Liverpool, Nick Harris looks at how other players to receive lengthy bans got on when they stepped back onto the pitch...
There are no shortage of subplots to Manchester United's Capital One Cup clash with Liverpool after a weekend where both sides suffered disappointing defeats, including United's 4-1 trouncing at the Etihad, but most intriguing of all is how Luiz Suarez will fare on his return from suspension.
The Uruguayan is priced at 8.07/1 to get the first goal, and 3.185/40 to be shown a card at Old Trafford as he enters the fray for the first time since April, when he was suspended for 10 matches after biting Branislav Ivanovic.
Suarez is far from the first man to receive a lengthy ban - indeed this is not even the first time he has picked up one himself, but how did those players get on when they made their long-awaited return to action?
Eric Cantona
The enigmatic Frenchman was banned for nine months after launching a "kung-fu" attack on a Crystal Palace supporter. Cantona eventually made his return in the 1995/96 season against Liverpool, scoring once and setting up another in a 2-2 draw, before his superb run of form in the second half of the campaign helped Manchester United overhaul Newcastle to win the league.
Paolo Di Canio
Normally such a quiet, reserved chap, the Premier League was shocked when Di Canio pushed over referee Paul Alcock when playing for Sheffield Wednesday in September 1998. The Italian was banned for 11 matches, and did not play for the Owls again after refusing to return even when his ban was finished. Di Canio joined West Ham in January 1999, and played 18 minutes in a 0-0 draw with Wimbledon in his debut. His first start was a 4-0 loss to Arsenal, but Di Canio helped West Ham rally to claim fifth place that season.
Rio Ferdinand
Ferdinand failed to turn up for a drugs test in September 2003, and ended up on the receiving end of an eight-month ban that saw him miss the rest of the season and Euro 2004. Like Cantona, the defender made his return against Liverpool, playing 90 minutes as Manchester United won 2-1 at Old Trafford.
Luis Suarez
Liverpool signed Suarez during a lengthy ban picked up when playing for Ajax, and his current lay-off is the third long suspension of his career. In his first full season for Liverpool, he was banned for eight games for racially abusing Patrice Evra. Suarez returned from the bench against Spurs in an eventful cameo that saw him volley Scott Parker in the stomach, before starting the next game against Manchester United at Old Trafford, when he scored in a 2-1 loss.
Joey Barton
The tempestuous midfielder made a significant mark on the title race in the 2011/12 season, when he was sent off in Manchester City's 3-2 win over QPR to win the league. Barton managed to commit at least three red card offences in a matter of minutes as he elbowed Carlos Tevez, kicked Sergio Aguero and attempted to headbutt Vincent Kompany, and was given a 12-match ban as a result. He made his return with Marseille in the Europa League the following season as they drew 2-2 with Fenerbahce, and enjoyed a solid season with the French club, despite later earning another ban for likening Thiago Silva to "an overweight ladyboy".
