Bad run won't prevent us from keeping our discipline

The Total Goals Guys tell us why a bad weekend won't alter their betting strategy

If we thought we were struggling with a betting bank of around £30 then we sure as hell are now after a low scoring weekend came close to wiping us out completely. Despite calling it spot on at Craven Cottage we were two goals short at Inverness and one goal short at St Andrews, The Madjeski and The Camp Nou.

In a flash our already skinny looking balance of £34.31 was slashed to a season long low of £13.31. A deficit of £86.69 isn't much to write home about and it's important we don't get carried away when in such a position.

How many of us have online accounts? Such facilities that we "use for fun" or to try out new systems, or put new theories into practice. The likely scenario is that we start with a nominal amount, usually £10 to £20, and a bit of early discipline combined with good old beginners luck sees that balance steadily rise. We quickly become obsessed with an increasing balance and any losses don't register too nicely. The chase begins and before we know it we are back to where we started and this triggers the comment you hear all too often down your local bookmakers or watering hole . . .

"I had a tenner left in my online account so I just fired it on a long-odds treble" - Why?

The amount such punters staked will no doubt be similar to the amount he or she opened the account with so why has the attitude changed and more importantly the discipline not there any more? It's almost self destruction really and is one clear example of why most bookies rake in thousands in profits every year. Too many of us, allow ourselves to be affected by sometimes even only one loss after a succession of profitable backs and this often leads to erratic uninformed gambling.

Yes we only have £13 left and yes its looking like 2007/2008 will be a losing one but we'd rather it was a loss that left us in a position to go into next season with the possibility of long term profit and not just a note in the betting history diary as "Total Goals Market 2007/08: -£100".

We are restricted to near minimum bets for the time being and our primary aim to steadily grow the balance remains. Its imperative we have a couple of good weeks in the month ahead however and a series of 1 and 2 goal backs might be the key.

The important thing is that we can sleep at night, we still have something to keep us going every weekend and if it doesn't we can maybe afford the odd laugh at ourselves if we are completely off the mark!
