Striker to sign to boost Celtic's title charge

While Rangers look likely to lose SPL top goalscorer Kenny Miller six months after their previous chief goal-getter Kris Boyd made his way to Middlesbrough, Celtic are looking to strengthen in attack in the winter transfer window and Kevin Phillips is the latest striker linked with a move to Parkhead.

Celtic are five points clear but the SPL title is still very much lying in the balance as Rangers have three games in hand and are rated [1.95] favourites and the Bhoys ([2.28]) are determined to do all they can to deny the Gers a third straight success in Walter Smith's final season before retiring.

Rangers goal per match average trumps the leaders by 2.39 to 2.14 and Miller has scored twice as many times as the Hoops' main goal threat Gary Hooper while prior to Anthony Stokes' weekend brace against former club Hibernian, no other player had hit more than five.

Scottish newspaper the Daily Record are responsible for the rumour that 37-year-old Birmingham reserve Kevin Phillips is a target for Neil Lennon, a story that hasn't been too well received by supporters, the majority appearing to believe that the 1999-00 Premier League top goalscorer is past it.

The former Sunderland forward has a hugely impressive career goal average of close to a goal every other game and even managed to net four times for Birmingham - who have ended their bid to sign Robbie Keane - last season in two starts and 17 substitute appearances.

Phillips has admitted that he is frustrated by bench role for the struggling Blues and will consider any offers that come along. Super Kev has eight England caps to his name, though he failed to score in those outings and was last used by his nation in 2002.

Could he be a useful squad player for Celtic? Have your say below...

Don't believe anything you see printed in either the Daily Rangers or the Scottish Sun. Lenny has his eyes on some pure quality talent and is well known for his red herrings.
