Celtic to beat Rangers to Commons signing

It's been a hugely disappointing start to 2011 for Rangers having been beaten by both of their title rivals Celtic and Hearts in the SPL to surrender the impetus in a race they at one point threatened to dominate and lost top goalscorer Kenny Miller to Turkish side Bursaspor.

There could be more bad news heading Walter Smith's way before the end of his final transfer window in charge at Ibrox though, as the Daily Record report that the champions have been priced out of a move for prolific Derby winger Kris Commons.

It doesn't stop there however, because the newspaper claims that Celtic have been tracking the progress of Rangers' attempts to sign the 27-year-old Scotland international and are about to meet his £20,000-a-week demands and bring him to Parkhead.

And while both clubs were primarily discussing a deal for the summer once Commons' Derby contract expires, the Daily Record speculate that if the Bhoys reach an agreement with the player, Neil Lennon may be tempted to lodge a cut-price bid to add him to his squad immediately.

Celtic are currently [2.02] favourites to regain the title and lead Rangers by five points having played two matches more, while their opponents tonight Hearts are two points further back with one game in hand.

Would the addition of Commons move them odds-on? Tell us below...
