Axed McClaren linked with West Brom job

Steve McClaren's miserable spell in charge of Bundesliga side Wolfsburg was brought to an end on Monday afternoon but he could be back to work in no time if there is any substance behind the movement in Betfair's next West Brom manager market since the news broke.

The former Middlesbrough boss traded at [3.0] to take over at The Hawthorns in the immediate aftermath of the revelation that his unsuccessful stint as the Bundesliga's first ever English trainer had come to a close, though his price has since drifted to [7.0].

McClaren rebuilt his reputation following an infamous spell as England coach by guiding FC Twente to the Eredivisie title in Holland last season, however he failed to carry that form into his stay in Germany and there can be few complaints about his dismissal after a run of one win in 11 that leaves the 2008-09 champions a point above the relegation play-off position.

His stock is higher than it was in 2007 when a 3-2 home defeat to Croatia in England's final Euro 2008 qualifier saw him turned into a laughing stock by the tabloid press, and McClaren's reasonable record at club level in England may lead Baggies chairman Jeremy Peace to view him as a contender.

Trend fans will also be intrigued by the coincidence that recently sacked Roberto Di Matteo's two predecessors in the Black Country both spent time at Middlesbrough, with Tony Mowbray captaining the Teessiders and Bryan Robson like McClaren starting his managerial career at the Riverside Stadium.

The Di Matteo appointment admittedly damages that pattern slightly but one of his most notable accomplishments as a player, scoring what was for 12 years the fastest goal in FA Cup Final history, was achieved against the Championship underachievers, who are now led by Mowbray!

Should West Brom consider McClaren for the job? Tell us below...
