Tottenham turn to former Man Utd keeper

One of the most memorable performances of Ben Foster's career to date was his penalty shootout heroics in the 2008-09 Carling Cup Final to deliver the trophy to Manchester United at Tottenham's expense, and Harry Redknapp doesn't appear to have forgotten his display that day.

The Daily Mirror are reporting that the Birmingham goalkeeper is one of Spurs' primary targets as they consider bringing in a replacement for Heurelho Gomes, who has made numerous mistakes in recent weeks to contribute to the collapse of his team's push for a second successive top-four finish.

The Brazilian shot-stopper was missing with a back injury on Tuesday night as Tottenham's pursuit of Champions League football was ended by Manchester City at Eastlands and deputy Carlo Cudicini impressed, however the Italian's lack of action this season is viewed as a sign that Redknapp isn't too keen.

Instead, it is believed that if the Lilywhites boss opts to get rid of Gomes, who he continues to back in the press and stayed loyal to during a difficult period in his first campaign at White Hart Lane, then he will look to add a new custodian to his squad rather than promote from within.

England international Foster has had a decent first term at Birmingham, rebuilding the confidence that many feel he lost in a testing spell at Old Trafford and once again being the star of the show in a Carling Cup triumph against opposition from north London, but the Blues are unlikely to want to sell.

The 28-year-old arrived in the second city for a sum somewhere in the region of £6 million last summer and a bigger bid than that will probably be required to prompt Alex McLeish to seriously contemplate accepting.

Will Spurs survive the last-gasp challenge of Everton to achieve a top-six finish this season? They are [1.03] to do so on Betfair...
