Tottenham go striker mad before deadline

It has been reported that Tottenham have enquired after four of the most prominent attacking players in La Liga right now as they bid to replace Robbie Keane before the transfer window closes tonight.

Keane was allowed to join West Ham on loan with a view to a permanent deal on Sunday afternoon and Sky Sports believe that Spurs remain determined to sign a striker to fill that void before the end of the winter window and have taken drastic action with a series of big-money manoeuvres.

The players in question are Atletico Madrid's Sergio Aguero, Athletic Bilbao's Fernando Llorente, Villarreal's Giuseppe Rossi - who extended his contract with the Yellow Submarine earlier this month - and Sevilla's Alvaro Negredo, although each of their offers has been rejected.

The Sky Sports source behind the speculation appears to be Guillem Balague, the Spanish football insider and pundit that broke news of Fernando Torres' desire to leave Liverpool, and it is still a possibility that the Aguero attempt will end successfully.

Tottenham have met Atletico's £38.5 million release clause for the Argentine forward but the 22-year-old would need to pay a substantial sum to buy out his contract in order for a move to happen, and the Spanish club's president Enrique Cerezo is determined to keep hold of his prize asset.

Meanwhile, Harry Redknapp has denied any knowledge of the Lilywhites making another enquiry about bringing Newcastle striker Andy Carroll to White Hart Lane.

However, in trademark fashion he suggested that his chairman may have, and it was of course Daniel Levy who was given all the credit by Redknapp for Spurs' deadline day foray in the summer market to capture Rafael van der Vaart from Real Madrid.
