Sunderland's Bent closes Golden Boot gap
The farcical opening goal and Steven Gerrard's elbow antics will be what most neutrals remember about Saturday's clash between Liverpool and Sunderland but the visiting fans won't be forgetting Darren Bent's latest star showing against a big club in a hurry.
The Sunderland striker struck twice at Anfield to improve his incredible goalscoring record against the Premier League's elite since signing for the Black Cats. The England international has netted ten times in a dozen appearances against the traditional Big Four and newcomers Tottenham to date.
Bent, whose ability to raise his game for the glamour matches appears to be mirrored by his team, will be given another chance to boost that tally when Manchester United visit the Stadium of Light next week looking for their first away win.
The 26-year-old's brace this weekend has brought him in to [15.5] to finish the season as Premier League top goalscorer after he benefitted from Dimitar Berbatov, Florent Malouda and Didier Drogba all firing blanks. Bent has five league goals to his name already, leaving him just one off the pace.
Last year's winner Drogba, who is tied with Bent on five, remains the frontrunner at [3.45] despite a rare ineffective showing against Manchester City. The fact that his favourite opponents Arsenal are visiting Stamford Bridge on Sunday may be a factor in that short price!
