Top five League Cup giant killings

Brentford stunned Everton last night, proving that there is still room for giant killing in the Carling Cup. With that in mind, below are five famous victories that left one portion of the crowd staring silently at their shoes...

Chester City 3-0 Leeds United, 1974
Pints of bitter will have been spilt the day that Leeds United went to Chester and came back with nothing but egg on their faces thanks to a surprise 3-0 drubbing at the hands of their hosts - who just so happened to be a lowly Division Four team, taking on the reigning Division One champions.

Manchester United 3-4 York City (aggregate), 1995
York City striker Paul Barnes stunned Old Trafford with a double strike, as York City took the eventual 1996 Premier League Champions to the sword with a 3-0 victory. A very young Paul Scholes managed to bag a couple of goals of his own on the return leg, but York managed to hold on to the tie, eventually going through 4-3 on aggregate.

Liverpool 1-2 Grimsby Town, 2001
In the third Round at Anfield, Grimsby managed to pull of a famous victory in extra-time, with a 120th minute goal grabbing a surprise 2-1 victory for the visitors. As if to deliberately rub salt into the wound, the lad who struck the final death blow was Phillip Jevons - a former Everton trainee.

Southend United 1-0 Manchester United, 2006
It's not unusual for big Premier League clubs to struggle in the Carling Cup, because most of them choose to field weakened teams for the competition. Even so, Southend can still claim bragging rights, for beating a Manchester United team which included Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney in the starting XI. On the plus side for United, they went on to win the league.

Man United 0-2 Coventry, 2007
On the back of a 4-1 spanking against Ipswich, it's fair to say that Coventry wouldn't have gone to Old Trafford expecting too much from a match against the reigning Premier League champions. And yet they won it 2-0, thanks to a double from their striker, Michael Mifsud. As seems to be tradition, Manchester United went on to win the league. Coventry crashed out in the next round.
