Man Utd will temporarily take top spot
Not only did Wednesday see United secure their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League, it was also a terrific night for followers of this column as all of our bets came in during the 1-0 win over Rangers. Can we keep up the form for Saturday's Premier League match against Blackburn? We will do our best.
We remember Rovers' last visit to OT; an unremarkable game blessed with two excellent goals, one from Wayne Rooney, the other from Dimitar Berbatov. We wouldn't bet against those two finding the net this time. Wayne was excellent at Ibrox, putting in perhaps best performance of the season and, after a quiet few weeks, Berba looked hungry to recover his splendid form. Back both to score when the markets go live.
Sir Alex Ferguson is a long time admirer of Sam Allardyce and the Blackburn boss should be applauded for the job he's done at Ewood Park. Last season's tenth-place finish was a great achievement on a limited budget and, under new ownership, Big Sam may now get the funds to kick on. Rovers don't have a good record at Old Trafford though - apart from a 2-1 win in 2005 - and, at [1.29], we expect United to collect another three points here.
It's vital that they do so because going top of the Premier League table - even if it's for less than 24 hours - on Saturday night would provide a psychological fillip to the Reds and those who have backed them to win the title. Their current price is [3.45], in from a high of [8.0].
Last week's 2-0 win against Wigan was the type of routine victory the Reds have built previous title campaigns on and another would be very welcome on Saturday. However, 2-0 is always the favourite scoreline for such fixtures at around [7.0], so we're going to go one better by backing 3-0 at [9.4].
On top of that you should add bets on over 2.5 goals at [1.7] and Man Utd win to nil at [2.0]. Nothing spectacular but enough to keep the betting balance and the title race ticking over.
