Man Utd see Scholes successor at Spurs

Just 24 hours after parading their record-breaking 19th English league championship around the streets of Manchester, Premier League champions Manchester United are preparing for a hectic summer after legendary midfielder Paul Scholes confirmed his retirement.

Chief executive David Gill warned supporters at the celebration that the Red Devils would be even more active than usual in the upcoming transfer window and it's easy to see why with Scholes and Edwin van der Sar both now in need of replacing.

Reports suggest that Sir Alex Ferguson and co are planning to move quickly to fill the gaps in their squad, with Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David de Gea already being actively pursued and Tottenham playmaker Luka Modric the name being mentioned as Croatia's answer to Scholes.

The Daily Mail are among the media sources to have declared the 25-year-old as Manchester United's first-choice target to succeed the ten-time title winner, who will now form part of the coaching staff at Old Trafford, with a fee of £20 million expected to test Spurs' resolve.

The Mail appear so convinced that a deal can be reached that they have already identified a potential replacement for Modric at White Hart Lane in the guise of Dinamo Zagreb creator Milan Badelj, who it is believed would cost the Lilywhites as much as £8.5 million.

Another rumour involving Manchester United and Tottenham is that Harry Redknapp will try to bring Dimitar Berbatov back to north London if the Bulgarian striker looks to join a club able to offer him greater first-team opportunities after he failed to even make the bench for the Champions League Final.

Will the title holders make the tweaks required to stay top? They are [3.0] favourites...

What a load of rubbish - wishful thinking from a (no doubt) fully paid up Man U supporters club.... do a search for fergie's successor I'd say - looked totally forlorn during the second half....
Leave Spurs alone....

Since when did the Daily Mail organise Spurs transfers, I must have missed that announcement, Modric for 20mil, considering he cost Spurs 16.5m as a relative unknown quantity in the Premiership and has grown into one of the best midfielders in the country I suppose we should be grateful of a 3.5m profit, while your at it why don't the Daily Mail sell Bale, Sandro, Van de Vart and any other Spurs player you care to mention.

Lazy journalism, I cannot wait for the season to start so I can stop reading all these silly unsubstantiated supposed reports.

I agree with George but let's add a little spice to the situation.

Luka to Man Utd for £20 million + D.Berbatov back to the Lane. Sounds like a good deal to me. Spurs need a consistent goalscorer.

Spurs think that Modric is irreplaceable. Not true, no player is! Come on you Spurs, broaden your horizons.
