Man Utd defender gives Terry his backing
There has been a lot of media speculation that Rio Ferdinand was appalled by the manner in which he was replaced as England captain by former skipper John Terry, however his successor has confirmed receiving a phone call from the Manchester United defender offering his support.
Terry spoke for the first time since regaining the armband in an England news conference on Tuesday afternoon and admitted that Fabio Capello's decision won't be universally popular, however the Chelsea centre back is adamant that he has learned from his year of punishment.
The Blues leader said: "Rio called me which was a very nice touch and goes to show what a great man Rio is.
"We had a 10-minute conversation and he wished me well. He cares about England and said the most important thing was to keep winning. He was naturally disappointed, but said the most important thing was to keep winning.
"I'm not going to be everybody's cup of tea, but it is the decision the manager has taken. Respect for the players around me and the manager has always been there.
"On a personal note I'm very delighted to get the armband back...I know what is asked of me on the pitch and away from it. Maybe the manager looked into that as well, that I had kept my head down and concentrated on playing well for club and country."
Terry's claims suggest that rumours that Ferdinand was considering his international future are wide of the mark, while the Three Lions are [1.48] to win their first match back under Terry's guidance away to Wales in Euro 2012 Qualifying Group G on Saturday.
