Andy's Wednesday tips - Man City to exit

Our star tipster Andy Gray has taken at look at three of Wednesday's most interesting Carling Cup third round clashes and recommended bets for each of them...

Aston Villa v Blackburn
This was a fantastic game which produced loads of goals in last season's semi-finals. This time, it will be Gerard Houllier's first game in charge and Villa fans will be glad to see some stability at the club. I'm not sure what Sam Allardyce will have in mind for this competition but he was disappointed to lose in the semi-finals last year and, after finishing tenth in the Premier League last season, Rovers should be aiming for more than survival. They should be trying to win the Carling Cup but, on the night, I think Villa will be too strong and I'm backing Houllier to get off to a winning start at [1.95].

Scunthorpe v Manchester United
Sir Alex Ferguson will play a weakened team against Scunthorpe but they should be able to win at Glanford Park at [1.43]. The home side will relish the opportunity to host Manchester United and, as the Red Devils have won this competition for the last two years, they might well field a few stars. Wait for team news before having a punt though.

West Brom v Manchester City
Manchester City boast such a strong squad that they should be contenders in this competition regardless of where it sits in their list of priorities. Roberto Di Matteo could rest key players as Premier League survival is his main objective this season. However, if the Italian decides to go for it, we could see an upset and I'm backing West Brom to win a tight game 1-0 at [14.5].
