Tottenham in sight as Liverpool win again
Every time that Kenny Dalglish's interim stewardship of Liverpool is called into question, his side respond by delivering an impressive result and that was the case again at the Stadium of Light on Sunday as they bounced back from their Europa League exit by beating Sunderland 2-0.
The significance of the result was increased by Tottenham's 0-0 draw at home to West Ham on Saturday lunchtime, which was incredibly the seventh time in eight matches that the Champions League quarter-finalists have failed to collect three points against one of the bottom six clubs.
It looked like returning to the Europa League next season would prove too big a task for the Reds given that they must finish in the top five to qualify, however the four-point gap to Tottenham no longer looks unbridgeable, especially as Spurs' game in hand is against Arsenal.
The Lilywhites still have to travel to Manchester City, Chelsea and - most crucially of all - Liverpool before the end of the campaign and with almost all of their other fixtures against the relegation battlers they struggle so much against, Dalglish's team will fancy their chances.
After all, while Liverpool have just eight Premier League encounters to focus on, Tottenham are preparing for two clashes with Real Madrid and, if they overcome that huge obstacle, potentially Barcelona, and a crushing defeat in one of those ties could affect morale ahead of a tricky run-in.
As shocking as it would be for the success story of the current Champions League not to qualify for any continental competition next season, Betfair punters obviously think that the Merseyside giants have an opportunity to catch them, with odds of [3.0] offered on them finishing higher.
Disagree? Spurs are [3.6] to repeat last year's heroic top-four finish...
