The in-play guide to Liverpool vs Man Utd

One of the biggest games of the Premier League season takes place on Sunday lunchtime at Anfield and it's not just in the build-up that you can look for ways to profit. We've highlighted three trends that could help you make money as the action unfolds...

If Liverpool concede first, they're finished
Liverpool came from behind to beat Manchester United twice in the 2008-09 as they battled for the Premier League title but much has changed in two years and the much-hyped "spirit of Istanbul" hasn't been in evidence much this season. The Reds have trailed on 14 occasions and on only three occasions have they managed to salvage anything, fighting back to beat Bolton and draw with Sunderland and Everton. Only three clubs have recovered fewer points from losing positions, so if the visitors break the deadlock early, don't be afraid to pile in.

Early goals are unlikely
Under 2.5 goals is expected at [1.75] but that price is likely to shrink even further if one of the trends of Liverpool's season so far is sustained. In four of their five league encounters with last year's top four, the opening strike has come in the 42nd minute or later, so if you bet on under 2.5 goals before kick-off, there should be an opportunity to lay off the bet as the odds come in and the interval approaches. Be sure to time it right though as the Reds have scored a third of their league goals between the 41st and 60th minutes.

Have a late look at the sending off market
Owing to the fact that dismissals are frequent features of clashes between the sides, the price offered on someone seeing red on Sunday are [3.35], but bigger odds may be obtainable for the more patient punters. There have been four sendings off in four meetings at Anfield and each has come in the final five minutes, so if Phil Dowd has kept his cards in his pocket heading into the final minutes, there may still be value in sticking a small sum on a team finishing the game with ten men.
