Ranieri likely to apply for the Liverpool job

Right now it looks fairly likely that interim Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish will assume the position on a full-time basis over the summer, but if the club's American owners decide to pursue a different route, it appears certain that Claudio Ranieri will be among the contenders for the Anfield job.

The former Chelsea boss resigned as trainer of the team that he has supported all his life, Roma, on Sunday afternoon after they collapsed from 3-0 up away to Genoa to suffer an incredible 4-3 defeat, which was their fourth straight reverse in all competitions.

The decision came after a fortnight in which the Giallorossi had gone from Serie A contenders to far from sure to qualify for the Champions League, while their adventure in this year's competition could soon be over after a 3-2 home defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk in the first leg of their last 16 clash.

His departure won't be greeted with too much sadness by supporters who protested with increasing volatility at the direction of the side or by attacking players like captain Francesco Totti that made life difficult for the Tinkerman this season by often overreacting when subbed by him during games.

Ranieri's first campaign was a glorious success though as he guided Roma to within a match of the scudetto and until the last few weeks, they had a chance of surprising sceptics again, having recovered from a poor start. He is expected to be replaced by inexperienced academy boss Vincenzo Montella.

The multi-time cup winner, who has never won a top-tier league, gave the impression that he was aware that his days at the Stadio Olimpico were numbered when interviewed by Sky Sports ahead of Wednesday's tie against Shakhtar, revealing that it was his dream to return to the Premier League.

Liverpool are the top-half club most likely to have a vacancy, besides perhaps Chelsea, where a comeback is unlikely, and he talked up the prospect of moving to Merseyside when asked in January, however Reds fans have their hearts set on Dalglish, so a lot would have to change for it to happen.

Will Ranieri's successor fight back against Shakhtar in Europe? They are [6.4] to qualify...

He's not welcome, the King is the man we want. If FSG were stupid enough to appoint this clown, then they will be in for a very rough ride. If Hodgson felt unwelcome, this guy will be completely deffed out.

I'm beginning to get used to complete rubbish being printed just to fill space. There's absolutely zero chance of FSG even looking at Ranieri as manager why should they?
Firstly he's 59, same age as Daglish, so no advantage there.
Secondly, other than the Intertoto Cup in 1998,
UEFA Super Cup in 2004 and a couple of domestic trophies, he's never won anything as player or manager.
Thirdly, the fans would need a major name if anyone was to take over from Dalglish, even if it was his choice to step down.
No this is just another journalistic invention.

Ranieri once described LFC as a 'lesser' club when winding the media up before a match with Chelsea - I can categorically state he's NOT WELCOME - if you think 'Dodgson' had a hard ride this guy would be slaughtered - more hot air from the Italian press.......Dalglish on the other hand is not only needed, wanted and the outstanding candidate for the job but he is also a living legend with the tactical nous to wipe the smile off the smug faces of the English media

It will be a waste of an application. He is a Chelsea reject. Liverpool FC should be serious about who they tout as a possible Liverpool manager. This guy has not won anything within the last few years as far as I know.

I agree with Tom about Ranieri, but must say again as I have said before that Benitez is the man we want back! Kenny D is fantastic for LFC,but should be conducting transfers etc;and connecting with the academy. He is also a great man for talking to players and giving them confidence! But by his own admission he is'n't the best tactician! Rafa is a great tactician! Under the 'NEW OWNERS'rather than the last owners LFC could have a fantastic combination with these two! Come back RAFA,most LFC fans love ya'
