Liverpool's Gerrard - top four is only target

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has admitted that winning the Premier League title is beyond his side, reports the Daily Mail.

The Reds have had a disastrous start to the season, with just five points from their first five games, and a Carling Cup exit at the hands of Northampton Town.

The chances of Liverpool winning their 19th league title may have already gone, but 30-year-old Gerrard still believes Liverpool can regain their place in the Champions League with a top four finish.

He said: "'A realistic target is to try to get back in the top four. Winning the title, of course, is a possibility because there's a chance it can happen.

"But realistically, our focus is to finish in the top four.

"If we finish first, second or third, fantastic, great, and we certainly won't give up on that, we'll fight all the way to the end."

Things are going from worse to abysmal for the Reds at the moment, with the Daily Star also reporting that Fernando Torres is once again ready to quit Anfield.

Torres is apparently angry the club has gone back on a promise to invest in top quality talent, and Manchester City are allegedly ready to capitalise with a £50 million bid for the Spain striker in January.
