Liverpool target England wingers after loss
It was a desperately disappointing weekend for Liverpool fans as Manchester United moved a significant step closer to a record-breaking 19th league championship and the result they all feared happened as Roy Hodgson showed he isn't quite as bad a manager as many of them had suggested.
One of the standout features of the Reds' somewhat inevitable 2-1 defeat to West Brom was that there was an eagerness to hit long balls to Andy Carroll and Kenny Dalglish hinted afterwards that he is aware that better wide threats would perhaps more effectively support the £35 million striker.
The Daily Mirror has noted the remarks and suggested that the interim boss, who is almost certain to be given the job on a permanent basis despite suffering his fifth loss in 15 games, has already identified a couple of England wingers that he rates capable of providing the quality service required.
The first name mentioned is Ashley Young, who is expected to leave Aston Villa in the summer regardless of whether they stay up as only 12 months will remain on his contract and he has rejected several attempts to extend it, although he has pledged to enter discussions at the end of the season.
Also believed to be on Dalglish's radar is recent Three Lions debutant Matt Jarvis, whose performances for Wolves over the last two years have seen his reputation rise dramatically having been playing in League One with Gillingham a few seasons back.
But while we'll have to wait a few months to see whether those rumours carry any substance, the outlook isn't quite as gloomy as first appears for their chances of qualifying for the Europa League, as Tottenham's draw at Wigan means they are still only five points shy of the Lilywhites.
