Liverpool look to sign out-of-contract star

Kenny Dalglish is considering rivalling AC Milan for the summer signature of Roma defender Philippe Mexes, who is widely expected to leave the Italian capital club on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of the season having snubbed previous offers of a new deal.

As regularly referenced on Betfair Football, with concerns over Daniel Agger's fitness raised recently and Jamie Carragher entering the final years of his career, bringing in another centre back is believed to be a priority for Liverpool, with the Daily Mirror today bringing Mexes' name into the equation.

Richard Dunne was surprisingly mentioned as a possibility earlier this week, while Wolfsburg's Simon Kjaer has been put forward by several of our readers, however French international Mexes obviously appeals because no transfer fee is required, while at 28, he has to be considered close to his peak.

But while interim boss Dalglish is a fan of Mexes, the Mirror believe that his first-choice target would be Gary Cahill, who we suggested as a potential Liverpool player in our look at five plausible arrivals, though the big difference in cost between the two defenders may make Mexes more viable.

Problems at the back have been a major factor in the Reds' disappointing away record this season, as they have conceded more goals on their travels than the likes of Newcastle and, perhaps most shockingly of all, bottom-of-the-league Wigan.

Despite that, they remain in contention for fifth place and a return to the Europa League, and can be backed at [3.0] to finish ahead of current occupants Tottenham, who are yet to visit Anfield.

Are Mexes and Cahill good enough for Liverpool? Have your say below...

He's a bit ponderous a a tad thuggish, don't see him as a Dalglish type player, we were linked with him years ago when he left France and he looked a real prospect, I think he really doesn't fit the bill for the sort of hungry young player we need.
