Liverpool linked with a relegated defender
Birmingham defender Scott Dann has emerged as a shock transfer target for Liverpool following his current club's relegation from the Premier League, according to reports in the Daily Mirror.
But if the Reds assumed that they would be able to buy the Merseyside-born centre back on the cheap now that his employers are preparing for at least a year then it would appear that they are mistaken, with the newspaper speculating that it would cost £10 million to convince the Blues to sell.
It's a hefty fee for a player with just 50 Premier League appearances to his name, even though the fact that he is only 24 means that he is likely to have resale value, which is apparently a major requirement for all signings made under their new owners.
Gary Cahill is believed to be another defender on Kenny Dalglish's shortlist, but Dann is perhaps a more viable addition as less competition is to be expected, they should be his first choice as he used to own a season ticket at Anfield and the England international would cost almost twice as much.
If the newspaper rumours are to be trusted, and that's always a big if of course, then Dalglish seems to be focussing his recruitment drive on proven, steady yet not spectacular Premier League talent, such as the likes of Brad Friedel, Stewart Downing, Charles N'Zogbia and Scott Parker.
Is that the way to go in order to sustain a title challenge next season? If you think so, you can back them at [12.5] to finish first on Betfair...
