Italian international wanted by Liverpool

Half of Liverpool's Premier League goals this season have been shared between Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, so it's no major surprise that manager Roy Hodgson is believed to be looking to make reinforcements in January.

What is surprising is that Antonio Cassano is a target for the Reds boss, according to the Metro. The 28-year-old has calmed down a bit in recent years but still has a habit of attracting trouble, as proven by his recent falling out with Sampdoria president Riccardo Garrone, which led to the club opening proceedings to have his contract terminated.

The recently recalled Italy international is desperate to stay and has gone to great lengths to make amends, even joking that "I'd drink a glass of petrol from the Garrone refinery if it meant his forgiveness."

It's not yet clear whether his wish will be granted though, which is why rumours of interest from Liverpool have emerged. The forward originally broke into the national team in 2003, but had a lengthy absence until new coach Cesare Prandelli brought him back into the set-up in August. He made his mark again quickly, with goals against Estonia and the Faroe Islands in Euro 2012 qualifiers.

Could Cassano really be on his way to Merseyside? Have your say below...

I hope we make a move for him - temperamental but a genius of a player!
