Tim Howard revealed this week that Everton won't lack motivation in the closing weeks of a rather underwhelming campaign due to their belief that they can catch Liverpool and record a fourth top-six finish in five years, and events could well be conspiring in their favour.

It was announced on Wednesday afternoon that Reds defender Daniel Agger will be out for the rest of the season with the knee injury that saw him last just 25 minutes of the chastening 2-1 defeat to unpopular former manager Roy Hodgson's West Brom last Saturday.

It hasn't been a good week whatsoever for interim manager Kenny Dalglish, who was already reeling from the unconfirmed rumours that captain Steven Gerrard may not play again this campaign either and has also learned that he will be without full back Glen Johnson for at least three weeks.

Everton aren't without injury problems themselves, with first-choice striker Louis Saha's ruled out of the Toffees' final seven fixtures, however the Frenchman had only started 14 times this term so they are experienced at having to cope without him.

David Moyes' side are also well versed in finishing with a flourish, as it has become a skill that they have been forced to acquire in recent seasons due to their frustrating tendency to start slowly. They didn't lose any of their last 11 in 2009-10 and were beaten just twice in 14 at the end of 2008-09.

They now trail Liverpool by only four points with 21 still up for grabs, yet are [3.5] to have overtaken them by May.
