Fulham keen to sign Championship striker

Mark Hughes hinted in the aftermath of Fulham's shock Boxing Day defeat at home to West Ham that he is eager to bring in a new forward in January to ease the problems created by the injury absences of Bobby Zamora and Moussa Dembele up front.

The Daily Mail are reporting today that Championship top goalscorer Jay Bothroyd could be top of Sparky's list and that it could cost the former Manchester City manager just £2 million to take the 28-year-old to Craven Cottage.

The Cardiff striker has scored a hugely impressive 15 goals in 19 games this season but his contract with the Welsh club expires in the summer, prompted speculation that the Bluebirds will look to offload him next month rather than risk losing him for nothing.

Dave Jones' side have been widely linked with a £1 million move for Everton attacker James Vaughan, who spent the first half of the campaign with strugglers Crystal Palace, and with Craig Bellamy and Michael Chopra also already at their disposal, the Mail are suggesting that Vaughan is being targeted as a replacement for Bothroyd rather than another new addition to the squad.

Bothroyd, who made his England debut as a substitute in the November friendly against France, has attempted to dismiss the transfer talk on his Twitter account though by saying: "There are always rumours but I am concentrating on getting to the Prem with Cardiff - that's my sole focus."
