Popular predecessor backs Chelsea boss

Chelsea are approaching the biggest game of their season away to Manchester United on Sunday with their chances of retaining the Premier League title very much still alive with three games remaining, however manager Carlo Ancelotti's future remains the subject of intense speculation.

The expectation of many members of the British press is that the Italian tactician will be sent packing by owner Roman Abramovich this summer despite guiding the Blues to their first ever double in his debut campaign and surviving a nightmare winter to restore the club to title contention this term.

One man who believes the Chelsea boss is getting a rough ride is another to have been prodded by Abramovich's itchy finger, Claudio Ranieri. Ancelotti's compatriot has feels that victory this weekend will see them crowned champions again and insists that a change at the top would be a mistake.

He said: "I don't know if he has to win the title to stay at Chelsea. I think he is doing a very good job - you can't win everything every year. Ancelotti is a great coach - he has proved it over the years. I hope he is given the chance to stay at Chelsea and win more trophies in the future."

If Ranieri's wish isn't granted though then it is anticipated that the former Juventus and AC Milan trainer will take on a position that the Tinkerman himself was holding earlier this season by taking charge of Roma.

There were fresh rumours of a deal this week when Ancelotti was in the Italian capital but Ancelotti denied that an agreement is in place, stating: "I have expressed many times it is my wish to one day coach Roma - that has always been my desire. However, this doesn't mean that I will do it tomorrow."
