Chelsea face a big decision over Ancelotti
Should Carlo Ancelotti's spectacular success in his first season as Chelsea manager prove enough to earn him a third term at Stamford Bridge despite this year's failure, or does a trophyless campaign leave Roman Abramovich with no choice but to start searching for his seventh coach?
The Italian tactician is certainly popular among his counterparts, with Sir Alex Ferguson and Harry Redknapp both defending the Blues boss following Sunday's title-bid ending 2-1 loss at Old Trafford, having both benefitted from the old English mentality of giving coaches time earlier in their careers.
The case made in Ancelotti's favour is that he has a sustained track record of success with two titles, two Champions Leagues, two domestic cups and five other pieces of silverware to his name, though his critics will point to his poor final years at AC Milan as evidence that he is unable to halt a decline.
Abramovich has shown through the dismissals of Ray Wilkins and Frank Arnesen that he is in spring cleaning mode, so things look bleak for Carletto, especially as not even victories against Newcastle and Everton will stop this being Chelsea's worst season points-wise since the Russian's takeover.
The main reason the oligarch is believed to have hired Ancelotti was because of his prior triumphs in Europe and that is the one area in which he has failed to impress in west London, exiting to Inter and then Manchester United with home and away defeats, a first for them in the Champions League.
All Ancelotti can hope for now is that his players don't let their heads drop and instead sign off in style with emphatic wins against Newcastle and Everton that provide an indication that they still fully support him. Chelsea are [1.71] to lead the Magpies at half-time and full-time on Sunday.
