Alternative bets for Man City v Chelsea
It's arguably the biggest game of the season so far, and with Chelsea facing their first real test there are plenty of markets available that present very enticing odds. Here's three we like the look of...
Back over 2.5 goals
A lot of the historical data about the meetings between these sides can be thrown out of the window in the wake of City's massive spending in recent years. So, just looking at their previous four games, there has only been one encounter that finished with under 2.5 goals scored. Last season's two league games finished 2-1 and 4-2 to City, and with only three of Chelsea's last 13 Premier League games finishing with two goals or less, backing over 2.5 goals at [1.98] could be well worth a punt.
Back Michael Essien to score
Frank Lampard's hernia problem has not only opened the door for Steven Gerrard to play in his preferred position for England, but it has also let Michael Essien off the leash. In the absence of Lampard, Essien has been getting forward more and making late runs into the box. Two goals against West Ham, and a Lampard-esq strike against MSK Zilina means he could be well worth backing to add to his tally against City, especially with Lampard now ruled out of the clash.
Back the half-time draw
The four post-takeover games involving these sides have produced two wins apiece - Chelsea won both matches in the 08/09 season, and City the two games last term. Of those three games, only Chelsea's 1-0 win March 2009 saw the sides separated at half-time. The other three games were level at the break, so backing a half-time draw at [2.32] looks very tempting. Interestingly, all three of those games were poised at 1-1 at the break so, if you're feeling adventurous, you could back another 1-1 half-time score at [7.8].
